This work is a bromoil photograph capturing the towns of Onagawa and Yuriage after the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11, 2011. Two months after the disaster, I was overwhelmed by a strange feeling as I faced a landscape that was shrouded in darkness and silence despite the clear sky. There was an “emptiness” there that was beyond emotions and could not be described in words. The use of the bromoil technique expresses the feeling of nothingness in the landscape after the catastrophe. This technique made it possible to depict a real scene in an unreal way. This work shows not only the traces of destruction caused by a natural disaster, but also the human fragility and strength hidden in the silence and emptiness left behind.
